Kaivalya Maha Math, now known as Kavale Math, is in Kavale, within the Ponda, Goa and is home to the revered Shree Vittal Rakumayi Rayee Temple. According to historical accounts, around the year 1630, 63rd mathdhipathi Shreemat Satchidanand Saraswati Swami Gaudapadacharya founded this esteemed Math. Today, it stands as the Kendra Math of the region. The word ‘Kavale’ is a linguistic derivation of the Sanskrit word ‘Kaivalya.’ It is formerly known as ‘Shree Saunsthan Gaudapadacharya Kaivalya Math’ because Shreemat Gaudapadacharya established the Math and was its first Mathadhipati. The Sanskrit term Kaivalya combines ‘Kevala’ meaning ‘only one’ and ‘Laya’ meaning ‘wave’. Together, they form the concept of ‘Kaivalya’, which is extensively discussed in the Vedas, the Upanishads, and, quite prominently, in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali Kaivalya represents a state of being and is considered the ultimate stage of enlightenment—a state of total awareness of the participative world while being detached from its coils and consequences. As Patanjali states, ‘The Atma finds its end in Kaivalya.’
